Great Article. The biggest question i have, can he get out major league hitters consistently or is he just a deceiving pitcher. Meaning if you pitch him twice in a series he will get lit up the second time.

Remember, injury is as much about genetics and predisposition to injury as it is about mechanics. There have been lots of guys with wacky mechanics that seem to throw forever without major injury. Also, there are plenty of pitchers with stress free perfect mechanics that dont hold up (Mark Prior, Schilling, etc).

It should be noted...Patterson is almost 29 and has NEVER missed time with any arm injury (knock on wood!).

Very nice analysis. I like how you guys are pragmatic - rather than droning on and on about how his early hip rotation is a negative in terms of velocity the point you make on the deception is a good one.

When you watch him it's pretty clear it's the deception that's getting him by so analyzingsspecifically why he is deceptive is really helpful. He's far from the standard pitcher so it's good to see an analysis which isn't standard.

It's also nice to not read an analysis of mechanics that concludes with great certainty that the pitcher will inevitably, 100% get hurt.

Well I only used that analogy because of the straight over the top nature of his arm. But yes it is fairly straight...and in comes Curt Schilling's theory of getting as over the top as possible for command purposes.

Wouldn't "an arm motion similar to a batting cage pitching machine" make his fastball flat and therefore easier to hit?

I guess that's where the above average control comes in?

So can I. Glad I'm not losing my mind, lol. I recorded this video myself in Scranton so MLB has no say on it.
